“Throughout the work of Vasiliki Kateri, one encounters the colors of a hidden spring, of an autumn’s guardian, of a summer destined to erupt… In other words, the colors of the seasons within us… With the secret anticipation of a volcanic eruption whose lava will illuminate the essential truths of our lives…”

— Sophia I. Fildis

poet – writer (1937 - 2011)

"It is handmade beauty, shaped from incorruptible yet living materials. And one wonders — how is it possible? How can they preserve life untouched within their core while death has conquered them so many times? And yet, it is possible… Because they are earth and water, and neither do the cliffs vanish, nor does the river run dry. They are traces of autumn, drawn into dance by the exhilarated wind; ash and roots and bark, fruits of the earth and shell dust, gathered in anger and scattered upon the roads. But it is the wind — and you cannot turn it back…You can only, if you wish and if you are initiated, listen to the whispers of the earth within its deep silence, hear its pentatonic melodies and its polyphony, follow the skipping dance of the river and the ribbons of the wind among the hanging beehives.

— Vanta (Vaitsa) Koutsokosta
writer – lyricist (1960–2020)

The use of natural materials in their natural color has been a constant element of Vasiliki Kateri’s artistic practice since the early 1990s. The compositions of this period, characterized by strong linear and geometric elements, were influenced by her studies in interior architecture and her systematic engagement with linear drawing.

Her continuous need for experimentation and the incorporation of new media and techniques gradually led her artistic exploration toward newer forms of composition, image transformation, and visual experience, where materiality coexists with photographic and digital processing.

The works presented below are representative of different creative periods in her artistic journey since 1997. Their presentation does not follow a strict chronological order, but rather approaches thematic and morphological groupings.

No Other Shore Further Away Has Yet Appeared | 2013

Installation | Mixed media

Artist’s accompanying text:

“No other shore further away has yet been found… An endless journey, an endless anticipation… a dream… a reality… Thoughts overtaking one another in rhythms that shatter the sluggishness of vastness. Wet footsteps searching for land and for a horizon capable of redemption. I steal the dazzling white of the little paper boat from my childhood and once again become its stowaway! With a ‘defiant’ smile, I escape through the burnt window of false promises and misery, and set sail toward the shore within me!”

Note:

The title of the work derives from the final verse of the XIX poem in Thanasis Pantes’ second poetry collection Poetry Does Not Sell (March 2012, Kostas Markakis & FARAI Publishing S.A.).

The work was presented in the context of group exhibitions. The specific photograph comes from Vasiliki Kateri’s participation in the group exhibition organized by the MANI PULSE artists’ group in Agios Nikolaos, West Mani, in 2019.
