A Cultural Initiative Rooted in Stoupa

STOUPA: The Kazantzakis – Zorbas Project is a long-term cultural initiative inspired by the encounter between Nikos Kazantzakis and George Zorbas in Stoupa, West Mani.

Rooted in the place where one of the most influential literary narratives of the twentieth century was born, the project seeks to explore the relationship between people, place, memory, and creativity through contemporary cultural actions, artistic collaborations, research, and participatory experiences.

The project approaches the legacy of Kazantzakis and Zorbas as a living source of inspiration that continues to engage with the present and open pathways toward the future.

Why Stoupa?

Stoupa is the historical heart of the project. It was here that Nikos Kazantzakis met George Zorbas and where the experience took shape that would inspire a story known throughout the world.

STOUPA: The Kazantzakis – Zorbas Project takes Stoupa as its point of reference, while recognising the wider natural, historical, and cultural landscape of West Mani that shaped the experience and relationship of the two men.

Stoupa is the point of departure. West Mani is the wider landscape that gives context to the story.

The project seeks to highlight this unique cultural legacy through contemporary initiatives that connect memory with creativity, local identity with international resonance, and heritage with future generations.

Historical Background & Documentation

Τhis initiative is founded on many years of research, documentation, and heritage-promotion activities undertaken by NARTURA – Cultural Association for Art and Nature and Katerina Exarchoulea-Georgilea, a member of the Association and the Stoupa representative of the Kazantzakis–Zorbas Cultural Routes of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis. Through this sustained effort, places associated with the meeting, collaboration, and friendship of Nikos Kazantzakis and George Zorbas in Stoupa, West Mani, were identified, documented, and brought to public attention.

This ongoing work contributed significantly to highlighting the historical and cultural importance of these sites of memory and laid the foundation for the development of the STOUPA: The Kazantzakis - Zorbas Project.

The First Footprints

The story of a place is preserved not only through memory, but also through the actions that keep it alive.

The first steps of the STOUPA: The Kazantzakis – Zorbas Project take shape through initiatives, collaborations, and cultural activities that highlight the connection between Nikos Kazantzakis, Giorgos Zorbas, Stoupa, and West Mani, creating new ways of connecting the past with the present.

The Vision

The STOUPA: The Kazantzakis – Zorbas Project is born in the place where Nikos Kazantzakis and George Zorbas met, with the aim of establishing Stoupa as a place of cultural memory, creativity, and international significance.

Drawing inspiration from a story that transcended its place of origin and travelled across the world, the project seeks to create a contemporary, participatory, and immersive cultural experience that connects people with place, memory with creativity, and cultural heritage with the future.

Through the collaboration of artists, researchers, educational institutions, local communities, and visitors, the project aspires to develop into a lasting cultural institution with an international outlook and strong roots in the place where the story of Kazantzakis and Zorbas began.
