Pamvotis Lake Project
The Pamvotis Lake Project is a multidisciplinary cultural platform centered on Lake Pamvotis (Pamvotida), the historic lake of Ioannina. Its name derives from the Homeric word meaning “the all-nurturing one,” reflecting the lake’s enduring role as a source of life, memory, and identity for the region.
Conceived by Christina Tzialla, the project positions the lake as a contemporary cultural ecosystem, a space where history, myth, landscape, and artistic creation converge. Drawing on the area’s rich historical, mythological, and environmental heritage, it reactivates Lake Pamvotis as a living cultural landmark.
One of the oldest lakes in Europe and an emblematic symbol of Ioannina, also known as the “Lake of kyra Frosyni”, Lake Pamvotis constitutes a core element of the region’s collective identity. The project engages this identity through contemporary artistic practices and structured cultural programming, establishing a stable point of reference within the local and wider cultural landscape.
Developed through interconnected actions implemented throughout the year, the Pamvotis Lake Project integrates site-specific performances, original literary creation, and initiatives linked to literary and academic tourism. Its approach fosters meaningful cultural experiences rooted in place, while maintaining respect for the natural and historical environment.
A key dimension of the project is narrative research and reinterpretation. Through long-term study of local myths, legends, and historical sources, original works of fiction by Christina Tzialla form part of the project’s evolving narrative framework. By crafting new myths, or recontextualizing existing ones, the initiative creates a contemporary storytelling environment that connects past and present in a coherent and accessible way.
The Pamvotis Lake Project operates primarily as a cultural initiative with developmental impact. As a creative platform, it encourages collaboration among artists, researchers, local institutions, and tourism professionals, contributing to a model of sustainable and qualitative tourism development grounded in identity, cultural production, and authentic experience.
The project operates under the auspices of Ioannina Region Hoteliers Association.
