Unique experiences with active audience participation
Theatrical routes through the alleyways of the Castle
An experiential performance of theatrical expression and narrative fiction in an outdoor, non-theatrical setting, rooted in the practices of interactive theatre.
Its aim is the revitalization and contemporary transmission of the region’s intangible cultural heritage, as well as the creation of a new cultural legacy for future generations.
Through theatrical routes, live storytelling and narrative fiction, the action activates public space, connecting memory, myth and place in a direct, participatory and contemporary way.
Here you listen to what the soldier of Dourahan Pasha has to recount as he crosses the frozen lake with his army. You discover how the knockers found their place on the castle doors, hear the tale of Eminé’s ghost, and much more.
We explore, we learn, we share, we play.
The route, without significant level of difficulty, includes stops at important landmarks within the Castle Town, as well as a small part of the lakeside zone.
The action is conducted exclusively in Greek and can be adapted to different age groups. Minors attend accompanied by a guardian. A version adapted for early childhood groups is also available under the title “Pashas in Ioannina and the Fairy Queen of the Castle.”
Starting point: Inside of the main gate of the castle (the Western Gate, known as St. George Gate), on the plateau below the Tower of Thomas. Meeting point at the entrance of the gate.
Duration of the tour: 90 minutes (approximately)
Participation Framework
- For school groups, participation is set at
€6 per student (minimum total fee €300).
- For cultural institutions and organized groups, the financial framework is shaped upon consultation.
Participants are kindly requested to arrive
15 minutes prior to the start time.
“Pashas in Ioannina” constitutes one of the components of the broader Pamvotis Lake Project, opening space for new narrative forms that draw from Christina Tzialla’s work “OUI,” which is forthcoming from Aparsis Editions. This development marks the transition to a new narrative field, deeply rooted in memory and landscape.

The initiative seeks to activate the living relationship between people and place, fostering cultural awareness across generations and encouraging deeper engagement with the city’s museums and monuments. In doing so, it contributes to a sustainable model of thematic and cultural tourism throughout the year.
It is not conceived as a guided tour, nor does it substitute historical or museum interpretation. Instead, it unfolds as narrative fiction inspired by historical events, myths and local legends, functioning as an artistic framework through which memory and place are re-approached and reimagined.
All texts are original works by Christina Tzialla, emerging from years of research and immersion in the region’s oral traditions and historical references. Through storytelling, a new narrative field is shaped — one that does not replicate history, but enters into creative dialogue with it.
Today, the phrase “pasha in Ioannina” signifies prosperity and ease — echoing a way of life once embodied by the many pashas who shaped the city’s past.
NOTE: The activity is conducted under the auspices of institutional bodies, without implying financial support. The broader operation of our non-profit organization is sustained through the support of partners and sponsors who believe in long-term cultural sustainability. We invite you to journey with us.
