PAMVOTIS LAKE PROJECT

“Pashahs in Ioannina” has completed its cycles of presentation. A new narrative form is emerging and will be presented when its time has ripened. Its narrative roots draw from Christina Tzialla’s literary work "OUI",  a contemporary lyrical fictional epic of place and collective memory, to be published in the coming months by APARSSIS Editions. With deep gratitude, we thank our collaborators, the schools, the institutions, and everyone who journeyed alongside us.

PAMVOTIS  LAKE  PROJECT

Unique experiences with active audience participation.

Theatrical routes through the alleys of the Castle. A site-specific theatrical experience of narrative fiction presented in an open-air, non-theatrical environment, drawing on the practices of interactive theatre.

Its aim was to revitalize and contemporarily transmit the intangible cultural heritage of the region of Ioannina, while contributing to the formation of a new cultural legacy for future generations.

Through theatrical routes, live storytelling, and narrative fiction, the project activated public space, connecting memory, myth, and place in a direct, participatory, and contemporary way.

Here, audiences heard the story of the soldier of Dourahan Pasha, who crossed the frozen lake with his army. They discovered how the knockers appeared on the Castle doors and listened to the tale of Eminé’s ghost. They stood beside the nurse of kyra Frosyni as she spoke her monologue, and many more stories unfolded along the way.

We shared, we learned, we experienced, we played

The route, with a low level of difficulty, included stops at significant outdoor landmarks within the Castle town, as well as in a small section of the lakeside area.

The activity was presented exclusively in Greek and could be adapted to different age groups. Minors attended only when accompanied by a guardian. A version adapted for early childhood groups was also developed under the special title “Pashahs in Ioannina and the Fairy Queen of the Castle.”

Starting point: Inside of the main gate of the castle (the Western Gate, known as St. George Gate), on the plateau below the Tower of Thomas. Meeting point at the entrance of the gate.

The main focus of the initiative is to activate the relationship between residents and visitors with the place, to enhance the cultural awareness of all age groups, and to encourage further exploration of the city's museums and monuments. In this way, the initiative significantly contributes to the development of thematic and cultural tourism throughout the year. It is not a guided tour and does not replace historical or museum presentations. It is based on narrative fiction, inspired by historical events, myths, and legends of the area, and functions as an artistic tool for approaching memory and the place.

The texts of the activity are original and signed by Christina Tzialla, resulting from many years of research and in-depth exploration of the local myths, legends, and historical references of the area. Through storytelling, a new narrative "reality" is created, which does not simply replicate history but engages creatively with it.

Today, the phrase "pasha in Ioannina" conveys the meaning of a good life and carefree living, just as the pashas used to experience in Ioannina... and there were many of them throughout the centuries.

ΝΟΤΕ: The activity is under the auspices of institutional bodies, without this implying financial support. The overall operation of our non-profit organization is based on the support of partners and sponsors who believe in sustainable cultural creation. Become a fellow traveler with us.
